Cuff

What is cuff fabric?

Cuff fabric is a knitted stretch fabric used to finish garment edges. It is commonly used for cuffs, waistbands, neckbands and sleeve hems where the fabric needs to stretch and recover. The ribbed structure helps the fabric sit neatly around the body without feeling too rigid.

Cuff fabric is usually more elastic and compact than standard jersey. It is selected for functional finishing, but it can also add texture or colour contrast to a garment.

Specifications

  • Construction Knitted rib fabric, usually with a compact elastic structure
  • Composition Commonly cotton, polyester, elastane or blends
  • Fabric weight Commonly around 220 to 350 g/m², depending on rib structure, density and composition
  • Stretchability High stretch with good recovery, especially when elastane is included
  • Abbreviations CO = cotton, PES = polyester, EL = elastane

Properties of the fabric

Cuff fabric is usually made in a rib knit construction. Alternating raised and recessed ribs give the fabric stretch, especially across the width. This makes it suitable for edges that need to open during dressing and return to shape afterwards.

The fabric is commonly made from cotton, polyester or blends, often with elastane. Cotton gives a soft and natural hand feel, while polyester can improve shape retention and durability. Elastane improves recovery, which is important for cuffs and waistbands that are stretched repeatedly.

Applications

  • Sleeve cuffs.
  • Waistbands for sweaters and jogging trousers.
  • Neckbands for T-shirts and sweaters.
  • Hem bands for bomber jackets and hoodies.
  • Ankle cuffs for jogging trousers.

Care instructions

  • Wash cuff fabric usually at 30°C or 40°C, depending on composition and colour.
  • Wash inside out to reduce friction and help protect the rib structure.
  • Avoid high tumble-drying temperatures, especially when elastane is included.
  • Air drying is preferred to help maintain stretch recovery.
  • Pre-wash cuff fabric before cutting when shrinkage could affect the final size.

Certificates

  • OEKO-TEX Standard 100 may be available depending on the specific article.
  • GRS may be available when recycled cotton or recycled polyester is used.
  • GOTS may be possible for qualities made from certified organic cotton.

Practical tip

Cut cuff fabric smaller than the garment edge so it can stretch slightly when sewn in place. Test the ratio first, because cuffs that are too tight pull the garment in, while cuffs that are too loose lose their function.
