Georgette

What is Georgette?

Georgette is a woven crêpe fabric, usually made in a plain weave with highly twisted yarns. These yarns create the characteristic grainy texture and slightly dry hand feel. The fabric is generally lightweight, semi-transparent and more textured than chiffon.

Crêpe georgette can be made from silk, viscose, polyester or blends. In some qualities, the crêpe effect is strengthened by a crêpe or granite weave. Because of its light structure and fluid drape, georgette needs careful handling during cutting and sewing.

Georgette

Georgette is a lightweight woven fabric with a slightly grainy surface and a fluid drape. The fabric is known for its airy feel, subtle transparency and softly textured appearance. It is often used for garments that need movement, lightness and a refined finish.

The crêpe-like texture comes from highly twisted yarns, often used in both warp and weft. This gives georgette more surface grain than smooth fabrics such as chiffon, while still keeping a soft and flowing character. Depending on the fibre composition and weight, georgette can be used as a single light layer or combined with lining for more coverage.

Applications

  • Blouses and tunics
  • Dresses and occasionwear
  • Skirts with movement
  • Scarves and shawls
  • Overlay layers for eveningwear
  • Sleeves, ruffles and decorative panels
  • Lightweight summer garments
  • Lined garments where extra coverage is needed

Care Instructions

Georgette should usually be washed at 30°C on a delicate programme, depending on the composition and finish. Silk or viscose georgette may require hand wash or professional cleaning. Do not bleach. Avoid tumble drying, as heat and friction can affect the texture and dimensions of the fabric. Iron at low temperature on the reverse side, preferably with a pressing cloth.

Certifications

OEKO-TEX Standard 100 may be available depending on the specific article. For children’s clothing or skin-contact garments, always check the certification and class per fabric.

Practical Tip

Stabilise georgette before cutting by laying it flat and avoiding tension in the fabric. Use fine pins, a sharp needle and a narrow seam finish to prevent pulling, shifting or fraying during production.
