What is viscose poplin fabric?

Viscose poplin is a woven fabric that combines the smooth, fine structure of poplin with the soft drape of viscose. Poplin is known for its clean surface and subtle crosswise rib, while viscose gives the fabric a more fluid and supple feel than cotton poplin. The result is a lightweight to medium-weight fabric with a refined look and comfortable movement.

Viscose poplin is especially relevant for garments that need a smooth surface, a soft hand feel and more drape than classic cotton poplin. It works well for blouses, dresses, skirts and lightweight trousers.

Properties of the fabric

Viscose poplin is usually woven in a plain weave with fine yarns and a compact surface. The poplin construction gives the fabric stability and a neat appearance, while the viscose fibre adds softness, moisture absorption and fluid movement. This makes the fabric less crisp than cotton poplin, but more flowing in the finished garment.

Because viscose can be more sensitive when wet, careful washing and drying are important. The fabric can shrink, crease or distort if handled too harshly during care. Viscose poplin usually has little to no natural stretch unless elastane is added.

  • Avoid high tumble-drying temperatures, as they can cause shrinkage or distortion.
  • Air drying is preferred to help protect drape and surface quality.
  • Pre-wash viscose poplin before cutting when shrinkage could affect the final size.
