Bouclé

What is Bouclé?

Bouclé is a woven or knitted fabric made with bouclé yarns. These yarns have small loops or curls, which create the fabric’s characteristic textured surface. The word bouclé comes from French and means “curled” or “looped”, referring to the structure of the yarn.

Depending on the composition and construction, bouclé can feel soft and woolly, firm and structured, or lighter and more flexible. Fashion bouclé is often used for Chanel-style jackets, blazers, coats and skirts, while heavier bouclé qualities are also suitable for upholstery, cushions and interior decoration.

Bouclé

Bouclé is a textured fabric with a distinctive looped or curled yarn surface, known for its rich structure, soft hand feel and luxurious appearance. The fabric has a lively, irregular texture that gives garments and interior items extra depth and character. Bouclé is especially popular for jackets, coats, blazers and decorative interior applications.

One of the main advantages of bouclé is its visual texture. The looped yarns create a soft, voluminous surface that looks elegant without needing a print or strong colour contrast. This makes bouclé a strong choice for timeless fashion pieces, premium outerwear, statement jackets and cosy interior styles.

Applications

  • Jackets and blazers
  • Coats and outerwear
  • Skirts and structured dresses
  • Chanel-style fashion pieces
  • Waistcoats and overshirts
  • Cushions and decorative interior items
  • Upholstery, depending on abrasion resistance
  • Statement garments and premium collections

Care Instructions

Care depends strongly on the fibre composition. Wool bouclé is usually best dry cleaned. Polyester or acrylic bouclé may be washable at 30°C on a delicate programme. Wash inside out where possible and avoid heavy spinning, as the looped surface can snag or lose structure. Do not tumble dry at high temperature. Ironing is usually not recommended; steam lightly from a distance if needed.

Certifications

OEKO-TEX Standard 100 may be available depending on the specific article. For upholstery or contract interior use, check additional technical requirements such as abrasion resistance, flame-retardant treatment or durability standards.

Practical Tip

Bouclé can fray or snag more easily because of its looped yarn structure. Use sharp scissors or a rotary cutter when cutting, handle the fabric carefully and finish seams properly to prevent fraying. For jackets and coats, a lining is recommended to improve comfort, shape and durability.
