What is Imitation Leather?
Imitation leather is a leather-like material made with a synthetic surface, often applied to a woven, knitted or non-woven textile base. The coating creates the visual effect of leather and can be finished with a smooth, grained, glossy, matte or embossed surface. Polyurethane and polyester-based coatings are common, depending on the quality and intended use.
Unlike real leather, imitation leather is produced as a textile-based material and is usually more uniform in thickness and appearance. It does not breathe in the same way as natural leather, and the surface can be sensitive to heat, abrasion and sharp folds. Stretch versions can occur when the base fabric contains elastane or has a knitted construction.
