What is Softshell?

Softshell is a functional fabric quality that combines wind-resistant, water-repellent and breathable properties with flexibility and stretch. Unlike hardshell jackets, softshell is more comfortable to move in and feels more pleasant on the skin. The fabric typically consists of three layers: an outer woven or knitted base, a middle membrane and a soft inner layer.

Applications

  • Outdoor jackets and windbreakers
  • Ski and snowboard clothing
  • Cycling clothing and running jackets
  • Children’s jackets and bodywarmers
  • Workwear for outdoor environments

Wash instructions

Washable at 30–40°C on a normal programme. Do not use fabric softener, as it damages the water-repellent layer. Can be tumble dried at low temperature, which helps reactivate the DWR coating. After several washes, reactivate with a steam iron or special spray.

Certifications

OEKO-TEX Standard 100 available for fabrics.

Practical Tip

The water-repellent DWR layer, Durable Water Repellent, wears down with use. Wash the garment at 40°C and then tumble dry it on a low setting to reactivate the coating.
