Fleece

What is Fleece?

Fleece is a soft synthetic fabric that is stron gly brushed or raised to create a warm, insulating surface. The brushing process lifts fibres from the fabric, creating a fluffy texture that feels soft against the skin. This surface structure helps the fabric retain warmth without becoming very heavy.

Most fleece qualities are made from polyester, although blends can also occur. The fabric is usually knitted before brushing, which gives it a comfortable and slightly flexible structure. Fleece can vary from thin microfleece to heavier qualities with more volume and insulation.

Fleece

Fleece is a soft, brushed fabric with a warm and insulating character. The fabric is known for its fluffy surface, light weight and comfortable hand feel. It is usually made from synthetic fibres, most often polyester, and is commonly used for casualwear, outdoor-inspired garments, linings and children’s clothing.

The warmth of fleece comes mainly from its raised fibre surface, which helps trap air. Despite its soft and voluminous feel, fleece is usually lighter than many woven winter fabrics. Depending on the weight, pile height and finish, it can be used as a lightweight layer or as a warmer outer layer.

Applications

  • Sweaters and hoodies
  • Vests and jackets
  • Outdoor-inspired layers
  • Children’s clothing
  • Blankets and throws
  • Linings for jackets and accessories
  • Loungewear and casualwear
  • Scarves, hats and soft accessories

Care Instructions

Fleece is usually washable at 30 to 40°C, depending on the composition and finish. Wash inside out to help protect the brushed surface and reduce pilling. Do not bleach. Avoid fabric softener, as it can affect moisture management and the surface feel. Air drying is preferred, or tumble dry at low temperature if the care label allows it.

Certifications

OEKO-TEX Standard 100 may be available depending on the specific article. Recycled polyester fleece may have additional certifications, depending on the fabric and supplier.

Practical Tip

Use a ballpoint or stretch needle when sewing knitted fleece to avoid damaging the fabric structure. For thicker fleece, reduce bulk in seam allowances and test the stitch length before production.
