What is Muslin?

Muslin is an extremely light, translucent woven fabric with a soft, fluid drape. Originally, muslin was woven from silk or fine cotton; today, viscose muslin is most commonly used in fashion because of its comparable softness and better affordability. Its transparency makes it a fabric that is almost always combined with a lining or slip dress.

Applications

  • Summer dresses and blouses
  • Scarves and shawls
  • Baby and children’s clothing
  • Eveningwear, lining required due to transparency
  • Oversized blouses and kimonos
  • Occasionwear and bridal dresses, as a top layer

Wash Instructions

Hand wash or delicate/silk programme at 30°C. Do not wring. Dry flat or hang to air dry. Lightly iron on a low temperature/silk setting on the inside.

Certifications

OEKO-TEX Standard 100 available. Ecovero muslin by Lenzing is available as a more sustainable variant with lower environmental impact.

Practical Tip

When cutting muslin: use sharp scissors, cut on a flat surface and secure the pattern with fine pins or tailor’s chalk. The fabric shifts easily.
