Towelling

What is towelling fabric?

Towelling fabric is a soft, absorbent fabric with loops or raised yarns on the surface. These loops increase the surface area of the fabric, which helps it absorb moisture. The fabric has a full, textile feel and is often used when comfort, absorbency and softness are important.

Towelling is commonly made from cotton, polyester blends or viscose blends. The exact hand feel, absorbency and drying behaviour depend on the fibre content, loop height, density and finish.

Specifications

  • Construction Woven or knitted fabric with looped or raised yarns on the surface
  • Composition Commonly cotton, polyester, viscose or blends
  • Fabric weight Commonly around 200 to 450 g/m², depending on loop height, density and composition
  • Stretchability Little stretch in woven towelling; more flexibility in knitted towelling
  • Abbreviations CO = cotton, PES = polyester, CV or VI = viscose, EL = elastane

Properties of the fabric

Towelling fabric is usually made with looped yarns that stand up from the base structure. These loops can be present on one side or both sides of the fabric. Higher and denser loops generally make the fabric softer and more absorbent, but they can also make it heavier and slower to dry.

Cotton-rich towelling feels natural and absorbent, while polyester blends can improve shape retention and drying time. Some towelling qualities may have a knitted base for more flexibility, while others are woven and more stable. The looped surface can snag, so careful cutting, sewing and washing help keep the fabric neat.

Applications

  • Bathrobes.
  • Towels and washcloths.
  • Beach ponchos.
  • Baby bibs and burp cloths.
  • Loungewear and relaxed summer tops.
  • Cushion covers and bathroom textiles.

Care instructions

  • Wash towelling fabric usually at 40°C, depending on composition and colour.
  • Wash before production when shrinkage could affect the final size.
  • Avoid fabric softener when absorbency is important, because it can coat the fibres.
  • Tumble drying on low temperature can help keep the loops soft when the care label allows it.
  • Cut or repair pulled loops instead of pulling them further out.

Certificates

  • OEKO-TEX Standard 100 may be available depending on the specific article.

Practical tip

Use a larger seam allowance or a well-covering seam finish when working with towelling. Looped fabrics can fray, shed or catch more during handling, especially around cut edges.
