What is tricot fabric?

Tricot is a knitted fabric with a flexible structure and a comfortable hand feel. In Dutch fabric terminology, tricot is often used as a broad term for knitted fabrics, especially jersey-like fabrics used in clothing. Because it is knitted rather than woven, tricot usually stretches more easily and moves well with the body.

Tricot is relevant for garments that need comfort, softness and freedom of movement. The exact look and behaviour depend on the knit structure, fibre content, weight and whether elastane is added.

Properties of the fabric

Tricot is made by forming loops from yarns, which gives the fabric natural flexibility. The surface is often smooth, but it can also be ribbed, brushed, textured or double-knitted depending on the construction. Single jersey, rib, interlock and stretch jersey can all fall within the wider tricot category.

Cotton tricot feels soft and breathable, while viscose tricot has more drape and a fluid hand feel. Polyester tricot is often shape-retaining and easy to care for. Elastane improves stretch and recovery, which is useful for fitted garments and active movement.

  • Leggings and close-fitting trousers.
  • Pyjamas and loungewear.
  • Baby bodysuits and soft baby garments.

Care instructions

  • Wash tricot usually at 30°C or 40°C, depending on composition and colour.
  • Wash inside out to reduce friction and help protect the surface.
  • Avoid high tumble-drying temperatures, especially when elastane or viscose is included.
  • Air drying is preferred to help reduce shrinkage and distortion.
  • Pre-wash tricot before cutting when shrinkage could affect the final size.

Practical tip

Check both stretch direction and recovery before cutting tricot. For fitted garments, recovery is just as important as stretch, because weak recovery can make seams, knees or elbows lose shape during wear.
