What is cotton poplin fabric?

Cotton poplin is a finely woven cotton fabric with a smooth surface and a crisp hand feel. The fabric is usually made in a plain weave with a subtle crosswise rib, giving it a clean and stable appearance. Because it is lightweight to medium-weight, cotton poplin works well for garments that need shape without becoming heavy.

Cotton poplin is especially relevant for shirts, blouses, dresses and children’s clothing. It has little natural stretch because it is woven, but versions with elastane can offer extra comfort.

What are the properties of Cotton Poplin?

Cotton Poplin is usually woven in a plain weave, but the difference between the warp and weft yarns creates its characteristic fine horizontal rib. The compact construction gives the fabric a clean, stable surface that holds its shape better than knitted cotton fabrics. Cotton contributes moisture absorption and a natural hand feel, while polyester in blended qualities can improve crease resistance and dimensional stability. The smooth surface also makes Poplin particularly suitable for sharp prints and detailed patterns.

How does Cotton Poplin feel?

Cotton Poplin generally feels smooth, fine and slightly crisp rather than soft and stretchy. The surface is compact and even, with only a subtle rib visible at close range.

Lighter qualities feel more flexible and are well suited to shirts and blouses, while denser qualities provide more body for structured garments. Cotton/polyester blends can feel slightly smoother and may crease less than pure cotton qualities.

Wash instructions

Washable at 40°C. White cotton poplin up to 60°C. Light ironing at medium temperature. Cotton / polyester blend: wrinkle-free or requires little ironing.

Certifications

Available with OEKO-TEX Standard 100. For children’s applications, pay attention to Class I or II.

Practical Tip

Poplin is ideal for prints: the smooth surface gives colours extra brightness and sharpness.
