Fleece

What is Fleece fabric?

Fleece is a knitted fabric with a soft, raised surface that is designed to provide warmth and volume. At Nooteboom Textiles, we have four main fleece types: Sherpa Fleece, Alphen Fleece, Coral Fleece and Polar Fleece. These four types differ clearly in surface structure, hand feel, volume and typical use, so they should not be treated as one identical fabric quality. Polyester is strongly represented across the fleece range, while some qualities also contain cotton or elastane.

What are the properties of Fleece?

Fleece is generally based on a knitted construction that is brushed or otherwise finished to create a raised surface. This raised structure increases volume and creates small air spaces that contribute to insulation. The exact character of the fabric depends strongly on the fleece type: Polar Fleece is relatively compact, Coral Fleece is more plush, Sherpa Fleece has a pronounced fluffy pile and Alphen Fleece combines a smooth face with a brushed reverse. Density, pile height, composition and finishing all influence warmth, flexibility and handling.

How does Fleece feel?

Fleece is generally soft and warm, but the hand feel differs clearly between the four main types in our assortment. Polar Fleece feels compact and softly brushed, while Coral Fleece has a smoother, more plush surface.

Sherpa Fleece feels bulkier and more textured because of its pronounced fluffy pile. Alphen Fleece feels smoother on the outside and soft and brushed on the inside, giving it a different character from the other fleece types.

Applications

Care Instructions

Fleece is usually washable at 30 to 40°C, depending on the composition and finish. Wash inside out to help protect the brushed surface and reduce pilling. Do not bleach. Avoid fabric softener, as it can affect moisture management and the surface feel. Air drying is preferred, or tumble dry at low temperature if the care label allows it.

Certifications

OEKO-TEX Standard 100 may be available depending on the specific article. Recycled polyester fleece may have additional certifications, depending on the fabric and supplier.

Practical Tip

Use a ballpoint or stretch needle when sewing knitted fleece to avoid damaging the fabric structure. For thicker fleece, reduce bulk in seam allowances and test the stitch length before production.
