Imitation Leather

What is Imitation Leather?

Imitation leather is a leather-like material made with a synthetic surface, often applied to a woven, knitted or non-woven textile base. The coating creates the visual effect of leather and can be finished with a smooth, grained, glossy, matte or embossed surface. Polyurethane and polyester-based coatings are common, depending on the quality and intended use.

Unlike real leather, imitation leather is produced as a textile-based material and is usually more uniform in thickness and appearance. It does not breathe in the same way as natural leather, and the surface can be sensitive to heat, abrasion and sharp folds. Stretch versions can occur when the base fabric contains elastane or has a knitted construction.

Imitation Leather

Imitation leather is a fabric or coated material designed to look like real leather without using animal hide. It usually consists of a textile base with a synthetic coating or surface layer. The result is a material with a smooth, leather-like appearance and a firmer hand feel than most regular fabrics.

The look, flexibility and durability depend strongly on the base fabric, coating type and surface finish. Some imitation leathers are soft and supple, while others are firmer and more structured. The material is often used for fashion garments, accessories, upholstery-inspired items and decorative details.

Applications

  • Jackets and biker-inspired garments
  • Skirts and trousers
  • Bags and accessories
  • Belts and decorative panels
  • Costume and fashion details
  • Cushions and decorative interior items
  • Upholstery-inspired applications
  • Patches, trims and reinforcement details

Care Instructions

Imitation leather should usually be wiped clean with a damp cloth rather than washed frequently. If washing is allowed, use a delicate programme at low temperature and always follow the care label. Do not bleach. Avoid tumble drying, direct high heat and prolonged sunlight, as these can affect the coating. Do not iron directly on the coated surface.

Certifications

OEKO-TEX Standard 100 may be available depending on the specific article. Some imitation leathers may also use recycled polyester or water-based polyurethane coatings, depending on the supplier and finish.

Practical Tip

Use clips instead of pins when working with imitation leather, because pinholes may remain visible in the coating. Test stitching, needle type and pressing on a sample first, and avoid heavy heat or steam directly on the surface.
