Loneta

What is Loneta?

Loneta is a strong, densely woven fabric similar to Canvas, but generally slightly lighter and more flexible. The fabric is usually made from cotton or a combination of cotton and polyester and has a matte, natural appearance. Its compact structure provides good shape retention, making Loneta suitable for applications where strength and stability are important. At Nooteboom Textiles, Loneta is used for applications such as bags, cushions, curtains, tablecloths and structured clothing.

Specifications

  • Construction: densely woven fabric, usually in a plain weave.
  • Composition: mainly cotton (CO), sometimes combined with polyester (PL).
  • Weight: medium to heavy, depending on yarn thickness, weave density and composition.
  • Stretchability: little to no stretch due to the compact woven construction.
  • Abbreviations: CO = cotton, PL = polyester.

Properties of Loneta

Loneta is generally produced using a compact plain weave, in which warp and weft yarns cross at regular intervals. This creates an even, sturdy surface with a relatively dry hand feel and little natural stretch. Compared with softer cotton fabrics, Loneta has more body and a less fluid drape. Cotton varieties absorb moisture, while adding polyester can help reduce creasing. The fabric is generally easy to cut and sew, although heavier qualities require a suitable needle and extra attention when sewing multiple layers.

Applications

  • Clothing: jackets, skirts, workwear and casual garments requiring a structured shape.
  • Interior textiles: decorative cushions, curtains, tablecloths and decorative covers.
  • Upholstery: light upholstery applications when the abrasion resistance of the specific quality is suitable.
  • Accessories: tote bags, shoppers, aprons and storage accessories.
  • Decoration: wall decorations and other applications requiring a stable woven fabric.

Wash Instructions

  • Washing temperature: generally 30 to 40°C if machine washing is permitted by the care label.
  • Drying advice: preferably air-dry to minimise unnecessary shrinkage and distortion.
  • Ironing instructions: iron according to the fibre composition and care label, as cotton generally tolerates higher temperatures than polyester blends.
  • Dry cleaning: only when permitted by the care label.
  • Special considerations: allow for possible shrinkage, colour bleeding and any coatings or special finishes.

Other Information

  • Certifications: OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 may apply to specific qualities, but it is not a standard characteristic of Loneta.
  • Sustainability aspects: environmental impact depends on factors such as fibre origin, composition, production and product lifespan.
  • Shrinkage and prewashing: cotton-rich varieties may shrink, making a wash test important before processing.
  • Available widths: depend on the specific fabric quality and intended application.
  • Colours and prints: Loneta is available in solid colours and a variety of printed designs.
  • Seasonal suitability: suitable for year-round applications.

What is the Difference Between Loneta and Canvas?

Loneta and Canvas are both sturdy woven fabrics commonly used for bags and interior applications. Loneta is generally considered a lighter and more manageable canvas-like fabric, while Canvas is also available in very heavy and rigid constructions. However, the distinction is not absolute, as both names cover a range of weights and fabric constructions.

Is Loneta Suitable for Upholstery?

Loneta can be suitable for light upholstery, decorative cushions and furniture covers, but not every quality can withstand intensive use. For chairs and sofas, abrasion resistance is particularly important and can be assessed using the Martindale test. Seam strength, lightfastness and finishing also help determine whether a specific fabric is suitable for upholstery.
