Molton

What is molton fabric?

Molton is a thick, coarse cotton fabric that is brushed on both sides. The brushed surface gives the fabric a soft, warm and slightly fluffy feel. Because of its thickness and absorbent character, molton is often used in bedding, protective layers and soft interior applications.

Molton is mainly valued for comfort, warmth and protection. It is less suitable for garments that need a fluid drape, but works well when softness, volume and a stable cotton base are important.

Properties of the fabric

Molton is usually made from cotton and has a dense, heavy structure. After weaving or knitting, the surface is brushed so that fibre ends are lifted from the yarns. This creates the soft, raised surface on both sides of the fabric.

The brushing process makes molton feel warmer and softer than a smooth cotton fabric. It can also make the surface more sensitive to pilling or fibre release, especially when exposed to frequent friction or harsh washing.

  • Fitted mattress covers.
  • Baby bedding and cot protection.
  • Table protection under tablecloths.
  • Soft protective layers in interior use.

Care instructions

  • Wash molton usually at 40°C, depending on composition and finish.
  • Higher washing temperatures may be possible for some bedding qualities, but always follow the care label.
  • Wash before production when shrinkage could affect the final size.
  • Air drying is preferred to reduce shrinkage and surface wear.
  • Avoid high heat when tumble drying, as this can cause shrinkage or harden the brushed surface.

Certificates

  • OEKO-TEX Standard 100 may be available depending on the specific article.
  • GOTS may be possible for qualities made from certified organic cotton.
  • GRS may be possible when recycled cotton or recycled polyester is used.

Practical tip

Pre-wash molton before cutting when exact sizing is important, especially for bedding or protective covers. Use generous seam allowances, as thick brushed fabrics can compress during sewing.
