What is ottoman fabric?

Ottoman is a woven fabric with a glossy surface and clear horizontal ribs. The ribs are slightly broader than those of bengaline, giving ottoman a more pronounced texture and a structured appearance. Because of this ribbed surface, the fabric has visual depth without relying on print or colour contrast.

Ottoman fabric is relevant for garments and decorative items that need body, texture and a refined finish. Depending on the fibre composition and fabric weight, it can feel crisp and structured or slightly softer with more drape.

Properties of the fabric

Ottoman is known for its horizontal rib structure. This rib effect can be created through the weave by allowing groups of yarns to form raised crosswise ribs. The result is a fabric with more surface relief than a flat plain weave.

The fabric is often compared with bengaline and faille. Ottoman has coarser ribs, bengaline has finer ribs and faille is usually finer and more silk-like in appearance. Ottoman is usually woven and has little natural stretch unless elastane is added or the construction is adapted.

  • Decorative cushion covers.

Care instructions

  • Wash ottoman usually at 30°C, depending on fibre composition and finish.
  • Wash inside out to help protect the ribbed surface.
  • Avoid high tumble-drying temperatures, as heat can affect structure and dimensions.
  • Iron on the reverse side at low to medium temperature.
  • Use a pressing cloth to avoid flattening or shining the ribbed surface.

  • OEKO-TEX Standard 100 may be available depending on the specific article.
  • GOTS may be possible for qualities made from certified organic cotton.

Practical tip

Keep the rib direction consistent when cutting ottoman fabric. Crosswise ribs can become visually uneven if pattern pieces are placed in different directions or pressed too heavily.
