What is waffle fabric?

Waffle fabric is a textured fabric with a raised square or honeycomb-like surface. The structure is created through the weave or knit, giving the fabric extra relief and a soft, absorbent feel. Because the surface has small recessed areas, waffle fabric can trap air and feel light while still offering texture and volume.

Waffle fabric is often used for garments, baby textiles and interior items that need softness, absorbency or a relaxed textured look. The exact hand feel depends on fibre content, fabric weight and whether the structure is woven or knitted.

Properties of the fabric

Waffle fabric has a three-dimensional surface with raised and recessed areas. This structure increases surface area, which can support moisture absorption and air circulation. Cotton-rich waffle feels natural and absorbent, while polyester blends can improve shape retention and drying time.

Waffle fabric can be woven or knitted. Woven waffle is usually more stable, while knitted waffle has more flexibility and stretch. The textured surface can distort under heavy tension, so gentle handling during cutting, sewing and washing is important.

Care instructions

  • Avoid high tumble-drying temperatures, especially when cotton or elastane is included.
  • Air drying is preferred to help preserve the textured structure.
  • Iron carefully at low to medium temperature without pressing the waffle texture flat.

Practical tip

Avoid stretching waffle fabric while sewing, because the raised structure can grow or distort under tension. Use a light pressure setting on the presser foot when possible to keep the texture even.
