Does a heavier fabric always resist abrasion better?
Not necessarily. A higher fabric weight can provide more material to wear through, but weight alone does not determine durability.
A dense fabric made with strong yarns may resist abrasion better than a heavier fabric with a loose or highly textured surface. Fibre strength, yarn construction and fabric density should therefore be considered together.
Are knitted fabrics abrasion resistant?
Knitted fabrics can also offer good abrasion resistance, particularly when they use strong synthetic fibres and a compact construction. Polyester and polyamide jerseys are often used where garments need both flexibility and resistance to repeated wear.
Looser knits and fabrics with exposed loops or heavily brushed surfaces may show surface wear sooner because more material is exposed to friction.
Abrasion resistance versus pilling
Abrasion resistance and pilling are both related to friction, but they describe different types of wear. Abrasion resistance concerns the gradual wearing away or weakening of a fabric, while pilling refers to small balls of entangled fibres forming on the surface.
A fabric can therefore remain structurally strong while still developing pilling. Fibre type, yarn construction and surface structure all influence how these properties develop.
How can you choose an abrasion-resistant fabric?
Do not judge abrasion resistance from composition alone. For high-wear applications, consider the fibre, yarn, fabric density, construction, surface and intended use together.
When abrasion performance is critical, laboratory test results such as Martindale data provide more useful information than fabric weight or fibre content on their own.
