What is Cretonne?

Cretonne is a medium-weight woven fabric, usually made in a plain weave. It is known for its sturdy construction and slightly rougher texture compared with finer cotton fabrics such as poplin or batiste. The fabric is often printed with larger patterns because the stable surface supports clear colour and motif definition.

Traditionally, cretonne is associated with cotton, but cotton/polyester blends can also occur. The fabric does not stretch because of its woven construction. Depending on the weight and finish, cretonne can be used for decorative interior items, accessories and garments that need a firmer shape.

What are the properties of Cretonne?

Cretonne is usually woven in a plain weave, which gives the fabric a stable and balanced construction. The surface is firmer and less fluid than lightweight apparel fabrics, making the material relatively easy to control during cutting and sewing. Its matte appearance and stable base work particularly well with printed motifs. Cotton qualities can soften somewhat with washing while retaining the characteristic woven structure.

How does Cretonne feel?

Cretonne generally feels firm, dry and slightly coarse rather than soft or flowing. The weave remains relatively flat and stable, giving the fabric more body than lightweight cotton fabrics such as voile.

Pure cotton qualities usually have a natural, matte hand feel. The firmness makes Cretonne suitable when a design needs shape without the stiffness of a much heavier canvas.

Care Instructions

Cretonne is usually washable at 30 to 40°C, depending on the composition, print and finish. Wash printed cretonne inside out to help protect the colour and surface. Do not bleach. Air drying is preferred, especially for cotton qualities that may shrink. Iron on the reverse side at medium temperature, and use extra care with printed surfaces.

Certifications

OEKO-TEX Standard 100 may be available depending on the specific article. For children’s products or baby-related applications, always check the certification and class per fabric.

Practical Tip

Pre-wash cretonne before cutting, especially when working with cotton qualities. This helps reduce the risk of shrinkage and gives a more reliable final size after production.
